A not so loud power trio may be a fair description of what you can expect from, “John Redell and the Company He Keeps”. We play Blues and Classic Rock, mostly from the 50s and 60s. Throw in some originals, not necessarily in a Blues or Classic Rock style. A handful of instrumentals and some improvisational interludes.
We have Dr. Michael Sontag on the Kit. Dixon L. Creasey, Jr. on Bass. I handle the Vocals and Guitar.
The name came about at first, as a way of fielding compliments sent my way by well intended Friends. I would respond by saying, “It’s the company I keep.” I meant it sincerely.
I’ve known for quite some time the importance of the Rhythm Section. And it was early on I realized that I and my Music are somehow affected by certain events and surroundings, as well as, by the Folk I am Blessed and Fortunate enough to call my Friends. And I am not just referring to my musical associates. The name includes those who share common interests with me. Those who time and again are part of events that shape our society.
Call it the Life Force we all share. The expression of the Human Spirit as it endeavors to Create. The bond of caring that comes from trust and long term relationships. In Blues circles, it may be referred to as Mojo.
It may be as subtle as a handshake or an embrace. There are times I only have to be in close proximity and I am affected. And it doesn’t always stop at the perimeters of endearment. There are instances where I also find myself sensing a heavier or more negative influence.
I usually do well with the filtering process, but there are situations where I am almost overwhelmed and find myself somewhat drained from the encounter. Situations where an inordinate amount of pain or sorrow are present. I try to take the attitude of absorbing some of the shock, to keep it from going on down the road. Sadly I confess there are times I can’t.
I was told recently that I should ward these off or repel them instead. To me, this just keeps it bouncing around and only protects oneself, and doesn’t seem to remove it from the common ground we all share.
This could all be a bunch of silliness, but I’m not the only one to feel this way or take this approach. So the name, “John Redell and the Company He Keeps”, takes on a much broader scope when you look at it from my perspective and realize I place a lot of value on the Inspiration I receive from those I consider Fellow Travelers on the Road of Life.
I am truly grateful to be surrounded by such a breed of Folk. My Life and Music are enhanced beyond measure... |
